New Nose, New Confidence on the Job

New research is showing that Frank Sinatra was on to something when he sang “If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere” about New York. It turns out that confident people are drawn to large cities like New York, and are more likely to be successful in business there than in other places.Though the link between confidence and big city living is just being discovered by the academic community, the link between confidence and success at work has been known about for a long time. In fact, a CareerBuilder study of the top factors interviewers consider when meeting with candidates includes such typical things as a willingness to work hard, dependability, organization, and flexibility, but rounding out the top-10 list is confidence. Why is confidence so important? Experts have reported that confident workers are often the most motivated, relaxed, and focused, and have mostly positive emotions. Conversely, they report, those lacking confidence can feel unmotivated, stressed, distracted, and negative. In a city that apparently draws confident people like a magnet, and with confidence being so key to success at work, why are so many people still lacking confidence? For some, worries about imperfections of the nose are the culprit. Nobody’s job performance should be judged on physical appearances alone, but when those appearances are causing you to feel a lack of self-esteem and self-worth, it can influence the way you work. You might be passing up leadership roles or speaking opportunities because it feels like the spotlight will shine too brightly upon you, or doing something as simple as skipping networking and happy hours with coworkers. Over time, these small decisions add up to a career that is less than what it could have been.Thankfully, in this day and age, there are plenty of options for men and women dealing with this issue. Today, nobody has to let dissatisfaction with the way they look get in the way of their success. If your nose is lowering your self-confidence, or distracting you from properly doing work or taking advantage of opportunities in the office, it might be time to consult with a professional who can discuss options for correcting existing imperfections.
