Demand the Best for Your Nose Surgery
There are all sorts of reasons that cause you to end up requiring some sort of medical attention. You can run your hand along a wooden railing and end up with nasty splinter. Falling asleep at the beach can result in a major sunburn. Lift something the wrong way, and your lower back can be in spasms before you know it. Any of these can be painful and even lead to complications. Seeking proper professional care is always prudent. Chances are, though, if you just let them run their course or do basic first aid at home, all will be well. This is not the case when it comes to surgery, especially nose surgery. All surgery is serious. Period. That said, when that surgery is not only on your face, but on the most prominent feature, the nose, there is simply no room for error. That means that it is crucially important that you find the most highly skilled and experienced surgeon available. There may be times and places where it is okay to take chances or cut corners, but when it comes to surgery on your nose, you want only a surgeon who specializes solely in rhinoplasty.
How to Choose the Right Surgeon
With today’s marketing tactics, it is becoming increasingly difficult to tell what is truth and what is simply hype. It only takes a decent advertising budget for a relatively inexperienced newcomer to build a flashy website and run professional-looking television campaigns. How can you know what to believe?Unless you have a personal referral from someone you trust completely, you are going to have to do your homework. Even with that referral, it would not hurt to do some research. Start with education and certification. For a rhinoplasty surgeon, the certifications to look for include:The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS)The American Board of Otolaryngology (ABOto)The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS)Each of these professional boards has its own requirements. According to their website, the ABFPRS credential, for example, signifies that a surgeon:
- Has completed an approved residency in one of the two surgical specialties that include identifiable training in all aspects of facial plastic surgery (otolaryngology/head-and-neck surgery or plastic surgery, generally)
- Is double boarded, having earned prior certification in one of those specialties through the American Board of Medical Specialties or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Canada
- Has successfully completed a two-day examination
- Has submitted for peer-review an acceptable record of at least two years’ clinical experience, including operative reports of a minimum 100 facial plastic surgeries
- Holds proper licensure and subscribes to the ABFPRS Code of Ethics.
Membership in professional associations, such as The Rhinoplasty Society, The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery are also indicative of experience and qualifications. All of these are respected associations, but The Rhinoplasty Society has particularly stringent membership requirements.Education and credentialing are extremely important, but nothing equals experience. You want to make sure that the surgeon you choose has done the exact same procedure that you are considering many, many times. Ask for statistics and references. Testimonials on a website are great, but the names and contact information of those who have already had the same procedure can tell you far more. Talk to them.Last, but certainly not least, you should have a good rapport with your surgeon. You should be able to ask questions and feel confident that your surgeon has your best interests at heart.Experienced, board certified and dedicated, Dr. Geoffrey Tobias was recognized 12 times as “best in his field” by New York Magazine.
