What are the benefits of a closed rhinoplasty procedure?

Does it really matter how often you read about the increasing popularity of cosmetic surgery, especially nose jobs? It’s true, more and more people make changes to the structure of their noses every day. Some do it for functional reasons so that they can breathe better or stop snoring or a number of other health-related issues. Others, most actually, seek to change their appearance. Reasons for aesthetically-motivated rhinoplasty range from nose bumps and bulbous tips to the belief that the size does not fit the face. These can all be good reasons, and thousands of people are choosing this route every day.

But…when it comes down to you making the decision about allowing someone to surgically change the most prominent feature on your face, it all becomes very personal. Presumably, these other folks did their research and made informed decisions on what was to be done and the best techniques and procedures to use. Now, it’s your turn, and one of the most important considerations is whether to elect for open or closed rhinoplasty.

Basically, there are two types of rhinoplasty surgery. During open rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes an external incision in the columella, which is the skin and cartilage bridge that divides the nostrils into right and left sides. With the closed method, all incisions are made inside the nose, through the nostrils. The lines do blur somewhat because after the initial external cut during an open rhinoplasty procedure, additional incisions are made inside the nose.

Why Choose Closed Rhinoplasty Over Open?

There are advocates of both methods within the cosmetic surgery community. Within the last twenty years are so, the open technique has gained a lot of popularity. It’s much easier to observe what is going on during an open procedure, so it has been used to train young surgeons. It requires a great deal of manual dexterity and skill to work entirely within the nose, and this can take years of experience before a surgeon becomes proficient and comfortable.

The reason experienced rhinoplasty surgeons used the closed method is that there are definite advantages. These include:

  • No visible scarring
  • Very little pain
  • Less post-operative bruising and swelling
  • Shorter recovery period
  • Less time required for procedure
  • Quicker return to a normal appearance

It’s important to do your research and be as informed as possible about the pros and cons of all aspects of any surgical procedure. Sometimes that’s not easy. In today’s world we have massive amounts of information available to us, but it has become increasingly difficult to find the nuggets of truth that we need to make those informed decisions. That’s why the number one most important step you can take is to find and consult with an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon that you trust. Being prepared for your rhinoplasty surgery and familiar with what to expect at each stage cannot be overly stressed.
